Featuring the classic rivals of the HU’s – Hampton University and Howard University, and the southern classic battle between two of the country’s top Division II schools, Virginia State University and Virginia Union University, The Big Apple Classic is a rivalry equal to that of the NY Knicks and the Boston Celtics. Launched in 2006, the Big Apple Classic is a fierce and unique competition as four rival Historically Black Colleges and Universities let the battles unfold on the court of the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City. Because four HBCU teams will have the privilege of playing in this venue, the Big Apple Classic not only increases awareness of some of the top basketball programs in the nation, but it also serves as a catalyst to encourage more college recruitment and attendance by quality students from the northeast region of the county. This doubleheader brings HBCU basketball to thousands of dedicated alumni, proud college students and sports fans around the country. This exciting competition takes place at Madison Square Garden in a legendary city know for excitement and entertainment unlike any other place in the world.
As is tradition for the BAC, a portion of game proceeds is donated to a charitable organization. The Big Apple Classic is deeply committed to promoting higher education as demonstrated by past partnerships with the American Cancer Society, the Thurgood Marshall Foundation, Every Child USA, AES and others to increase awareness and support of each organization.
This year, the BAC has partnered with Educational Learning Opportunities, an organization designed specifically to provide educational and professional mentorship. With such similar missions, the BAC and Educational Learning Opportunities have naturally joined forces to promote higher education and the well-being of the youth in America.
HBCU’s have provided quality education to young students for many decades, and as the BAC promotes the HBCU experience and raises awareness of the quality education that HBCU’s provide, we will also donate a portion of the proceeds to help support the exemplary mission of Educational Learning Opportunities.
